Mrs. Gardner's 4th grade students remembered September 11th by creating STEM-based projects in the form of memorial tributes. Prior to the projects, Mrs. Gardner shared pictures and stories from The New York Times: A Nation Challenged, A Visual History of 9/11 and its Aftermath, and The Day The Towers Fell, and September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right to build background knowledge and interest in the upcoming memorial design project. With the help of Lee University's Dr. Shane Brown, students tackled the Design Thinking Process by:
Asking: What type of memorial can we design and build to honor the heroes and uplifting stories of September 11th?
Imagining: Students observed images of other memorials as they began to imagine what type of memorial they might create to honor the heroes of 9/11.
Planning: Students were provided with grid paper to draft multiple ideas and structures.
Creating: Students were given a variety of supplies to create a 3-D model of their memorial design.
Testing/Improving: Students problem-solved, tested, and improved their designs during the creation process.
Presenting: Students presented their final memorial creations to the class.
